BLANK MIDI

for piano four hands and fixed media electronics
performed by Alexandre Tavares and Dimitry Batalov
recorded at Jazzcampus Basel
composed, recorded, produced by Mehmet Ali Simayli

BLANK MIDI is a piece composed with the imaginary world of black midi music, which contains a
large number of MIDI data in musical composition and found a place in 2000s internet culture and
memeification. Fantasizing the instrument piano as an object of hyperification of its potential led
the piece BLANK MIDI to expand into a transcription process: from a generative and
algorithmically composed MIDI piano piece into an acoustic translation on the acoustic piano.
The hybrid result becomes a comparison of two worlds—yet also a synthesis—of the instrumental
fantasia and the acoustic phenomena of hearing an instrument as a source. Here, with the

speakers placed inside the piano, the piano becomes a hyper-object, playing with the pre-
determined image and roles of objects in our daily life, such as the aristocratic piano.
